What to wear for headshots

Headshots are essential for connecting with your clients and customers. People want to know who they’re working with! Your headshots represent you and your business, so it’s super important to look your best. Getting professional photos done will communicate high-quality service and professionalism to your clients. I’ve put together some tips to make you look and feel your best on the day of your headshots. And you can always reach out to me with questions!

Choose colors that are mid-tone range, and then go bold (if you wanna)

Avoid neon and pastel and stick to neutral and earth tone clothing. I love a desert palette like sage green and camel.

Tones that flatter all skin tones are pale pinks and dark purples. And of course black and white are always classic! Wearing all black or white can showcase a clean + elevated look.

If it suits your brand, bring a bold color like red, bright blue, or teal to give our shoot variety. We usually have time for at least one outfit change during a session.

Solids are solid

Patterns and prints can sometimes overtake the photo, so I always recommend solids for headshots. Sometimes prints can work if they’re layered with a solid top layer, but avoid tight patterns like polka dots or pinstripes.

Dress to impress

Consider your profession! If you work in real estate or banking, consider dressing more formal and with darker colors. If you’re a ceramicist, wear your work clothes and let’s get you in action. Clothes that say something about you (and that you feel good in) are always recommended.

The key here is to wear clothes that fit well and are wrinkle- and pet-hair free. Bring a lint roller. Steam or iron your clothes before we start. I would avoid wearing brand new clothes, because you don’t always know how they’ll photograph. Wear your tried and trues.

Hair and make-up

I love a bold makeup look, but headshot day is probably not the day to do it. Keep it natural and true to you. Wear lipstick with a slight shimmer or gloss, and avoid dark, bold colors. Use neutral tones for your eyeshadow, and avoid shimmery eyeshadow. Wear a hairstyle that feels like your elevated everyday ‘do; don’t experiment with something new on headshot day. I have lots of hair and makeup recommendations so just reach out if you want one!

Layers

I’m all about variety. Bring an extra blazer or two. If you want to make a formal look more casual, bring your favorite leather or jean jacket. We can also do a tie and no-tie look. Hats are a great moment for the end of our session. These are just a few simple ways to vary a look without even having to change clothes!

Jewelry

Wearing jewelry is great, but keep it simple. Don’t wear anything too big or flashy to distract from your face.

Alright friends, this is a lot of info. If you have any questions or need advice about what to wear for our upcoming headshots together, feel free to reach out — I want you to feel your best!
